Program Entrance

Entrance into the Program

The goal of our Two-way Dual Language Model is to maintain as close as possible a 50/50 ratio of Spanish dominant students and English dominant students in this program.

Grade K

  • English Learners (ELs) – If students are identified as ELs per state-mandated criteria with Spanish as home language survey, their first program option is Dual Language after the LPAC recommends program placement. ELs have the highest priority for placement in our dual language academy. The LPAC committee must consider all student data and background in order to determine the best program placement for each child. For students transferring into our district as identified ELs participating in a bilingual program, our dual language is an option for them if this placement is aligned with the type of instruction the student received in the previous district. Spanish proficiency testing may be administered to determine the level of Spanish of a transferring student so that teachers can provide language support accordingly. This will be done to ensure that the transferring student continues to have a positive experience in a dual language setting.
  • English Proficient (EP) Dual Language Transfers – All EP students who were participating in a dual language program in previous districts are admitted into the program if they qualify and there are spots available in the applicant's grade level. Before a DL transfer is admitted, the district will conduct language assessments along with DRA and EDL to determine reading levels in English and Spanish.
  • Incoming Kindergarten English-Spanish Proficient Students – These are students who demonstrate oral and pre-literacy proficiency in English and Spanish and have Spanish in their home language survey. In this category, students must score “proficient” or “above proficient” in both languages in a state-approved oral language proficiency Parents are required to attend a special parent information session as these students will participate as non-ELs.
  • Incoming native English-speaking Kindergarten studentsIn order to maintain the 50-50 ratio of students in the dual language academy, any incoming KG native English speaker can apply to participate in our Dual Language academy in the spring of the prior school year. These students will be screened with a state-approved English language proficiency test to ensure that their strength in their English language will support a positive experience in our dual language setting. A requirement for the admission into our DL academy includes attendance to two (2) parent informational meetings: a meeting prior to applying to the program and a second meeting after being admitted into the program. Once a student is admitted into the dual language academy at Forney ISD, a signed commitment through sixth grade is required in order to ensure academic biliteracy.
  • Important: All English Proficient (EP) applicants must have Kindergarten enrollment completed in Skyward before submitting their application
