Information Technology

  • The effective use of technology significantly benefits both the students and staff of Forney ISD in a variety of ways. Through technology, our students are provided enhanced modes of learning, while developing the skills that will be necessary to compete in their future society. Likewise, today's use of technology by district staff results in an overall increase in productivity, accuracy and creativity.

To ensure these benefits are realized, Forney ISD maintains a technology strategy that is fully integrated with district curriculum and professional needs.

IT Status & Updates

  • Student Password Resets Going Forward

Posted by Howard Carlin on 9/29/2022 8:00:00 AM

A little over a month ago, we announced that Forney ISD teachers could reset their students' passwords from within MyFISD. Since then, we've seen teachers quickly adopt this new feature and use it to full effect as part of their classroom management toolkit.

Students who forget their password are able to receive immediate assistance from their teacher(s) without having to leave the classroom. This reduces stress on students who would have previously been unable to participate in classroom activities and reduces instructional downtime due to login issues. With such amazing feedback, we've made the (obvious?) decision to maintain support for this feature in the long-term and have it supplant the Help Desk as the back-up method for student password resets.

Over the next week, we will be updating our support documentation and messaging to direct students to their teachers for all password reset scenarios, and on October 7th (Fall Break) we will be removing the "Student Password Reset" request type from the Help Desk.

For more information on how students (and staff) can manage their MyFISD account password going forward, please review this document:

  • Service Interruption: Edugence "500" Errors

Posted by Howard Carlin on 9/22/2022 10:30:00 AM

The Edugence platform is currently experiencing stability issues, resulting in "500" errors for users. Forney ISD IT has made Edugence aware and they are investigating the issues.

At this time, we do not know the root cause of the errors, and it appears to affect users inconsistently. Some users are not able to login, while others can login, but the web portal will crash when trying to open certain menus or pages. Some users have no errors at all.

We're working with Edugence to provide them with detailed reports and logs of the issues. We will update this post as more information becomes available.

    Updated (Sept 22, 2022 1:08PM)

Edugence believes that a large number of user issues are related to assessment link sharing.

As a workaround, while they address the issue, they have asked that all teachers ensure students are accessing assessments from the Web Portal, and not through a session link. The Forney ISD Learner Services team has created these instructions, and asks that all teachers guide their students through this process if they are receiving the 500 errors.

If you or a student continue to have issues, please consult a Learning Specialist or submit a Help Desk request.

  • Service Interruption: Printing

Posted by Howard Carlin on 9/19/2022 9:45:00 AM

IT is currently investigating reports of print services not being available across the district. We will update this post as we learn more.

    Updated (Sept 19, 2022, 10:15AM)

We identified an issue that was preventing new print jobs from being sent to any printer, and was also preventing jobs from being released from any FollowMe print queue.

We have taken immediate action to correct the issue and we're seeing services slowly restore across the district. We will continue to monitor the situation closely, but ask that anyone experiencing issues please restart their PC before submitting (or replying to) a Help Desk request.

Please be aware that all print jobs submitted a print queue before 10AM were deleted as part of this resolution, and will need to be resubmitted.

  • Increasing Security for Unused Access Control Tokens

Posted by Howard Carlin on 9/13/2022 8:00:00 AM

As part of our ongoing review of security procedures in Forney ISD, a change has been made to our Facility Access Control System. Effective immediately, all Access Control Tokens will automatically be disabled after 45 days of inactivity.

A token is any electronic "key" that our access control system uses to identify you as an individual and allow access to our buildings. The most common examples in Forney ISD are keycards and NTTA TollTags.

This change will ensure that only regularly used tokens remain active in our system, and will prevent the misuse or abuse of lost or stolen tokens.

  • Service Outage: Internet (and all reliant services)

Posted by Kathy Kimbrough on 9/7/2022 6:40:00 PM

Forney ISD is experiencing an internet outage caused by a service interruption outside of our network. The outage began at approximately 5:15 PM. At this time, there is no conclusive cause of the interruption, but we are continuing to monitor the situation with our ISP.

    Update (September 7, 2022 7:45PM):

Our ISP has identified the root cause as a major fiber line cut in Downtown Dallas. Repair crews are on-site, but no estimations are available for when service will be restored.

    Update (September 8, 2022 5:03AM):

Repairs are still underway in Dallas, but a second cut has been found in Crandall. Crews are enroute to the Crandall site to begin repairs.

    Update (September 8, 2022 6:07AM):

Repairs in Dallas have been completed and some districts are seeing service restored. Forney ISD is still down at this time. The repair team is on-site in Crandall and beginning work.

    Update (September 8, 2022 7:00AM):

Service was restored at approximately 6:40AM and has been stable since. At this time, Forney ISD believes the outage to be resolved, but we are continuing conversations with our ISP to ensure service remains stable throughout the day.

  • Service Interruption: Google Drive Sharing

Posted by Howard Carlin on 8/15/2022 11:25:00 AM

Some users in Forney ISD are receiving the following error when sharing in Google Drive:

You cannot share this item because it has been flagged as inappropriate.

We have reached out to Google and they have identified this as a known bug they are tracking. They did not have an estimated time to resolution, but they did offer the following work-around:

When sharing a doc or file on Google Drive, uncheck the box for "Notify People" before hitting "Share". This will prevent error messages.

  • chromeOS updates

Posted by Howard Carlin on 8/11/2022 10:30:00 AM

Good morning Forney Family! Welcome back to school!

Today, the Forney ISD IT Department is highlighting some new features that have come to chromeOS over the last year. Some of these were obvious and impactful, but others may be hidden gems that can help you during your school day:

    New Launcher
The launcher (aka start menu or app tray) and all system menus have been updated to allow for light and dark themes, the app launcher itself is now more streamlined to take up less screen space and allow for easier organization of your apps, and a new wallpaper tool has been added for more personal customization of your desktop. Google Calendar is also accessible with just a single click from the system tray.

    Virtual Desktops
If you are a power user, chromeOS now supports virtual desktops!

    Screen Capture
Not only has it been completely rebuilt from the ground up to be more intuitive and flexible, a new feature has been added to include both your webcam and microphone in the capture. So you can record your own video notations as you are capturing the screen.

    New Camera tools
The camera app has been updated to create better quality videos, GIFs, and can be used as a document scanner!

    Accessibility Features
There is a new docked magnifying tool for easier magnification without sacrificing all of your screen space. Dictation commands for voice-to-text have been updated, allowing you to edit your dictations as you take them.

If you’re interested in learning more about these new features, or want to see all of the new features that have been added to chromeOS recently, you can find more information in the “Explore” app installed on every chromeOS device!
